Boulder-Top Tower. Holly Group, Hovenweep National Monument, Colorado

Near the heads of Canyons in this arid area of Colorado, the ancient Anasazi built mysterious stone towers of varied shapes. People lived in more conventional structures. Were the towers defensive? Used for signaling, for food storage, or, considering their odd shape and proximity to water and a frequent association with astronomical markers, did they serve Anasazi ritual?
