New
Alto Pueblo. Chaco Culture National Historical Park, New
Mexico.
One of the most advanced prehistoric civilizations north
of Mexico, and one of the most mysterious, the Chaco culture
linked a large area of what is now northwestern New Mexico.
A network of broad straight roads ran from outlying pueblos
to central Chaco Canyon. Just above the canyon at the
end of several of these ancient and likely ceremonial
roads lies the Alto group of ruins, including New Alto
seen here. The people of arid Chaco Canyon would have
seen life itself in a thunderstorm like this one approaching
New Alto.
