Shrine
of the Stone Lions. Bandelier National Monument, New Mexico
This hunting shrine, situated in a remote area high on
the Pajarito Plateau of New Mexico, has probably been
in continuous use for centuries-since late Anasazi times-and
is still revered by members of Chochiti Pueblo. Surrounded
by a ring of upright boulders, and a circle of bleached
elk and deer antlers, are two worn but recognizable recumbent
stone lions.
