A'le'ale'a
Heiau and Great Wall,. Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historial
Park, South Kona District, Island of Hawai'i
Breaking
religious kapu in old Hawai'i was to invite death, swiftly
executed and designed to emphasize the offence. Yet for
the violator of kapu there was a chance of escape: the
pu'uhonua or place of refuge. By fleeting and entering
the walls of a pu'uhonua the condemned could find sanctuary,
be absolved, and return to society unharmed.
