Petroglyph
Cave, Ka'u district, Island of Hawai'i
This rock carving, or petroglyph, was pecked into
the wall of a lava tube cave located in a desert area
of the Big Island of Hawai'i. Formed originally from an
ancient lava flow, the cave was a haven for prehistoric
Hawaiians who may have lived here seasonally or visited
it, collecting water dripping from the ceiling into gourds
placed below. Radiocarbon dating suggests occupation for
a least two hundred years prior to the nineteenth century.
This cave was inspiration for the ones featured in Corson's
novel, Aloha, Mr. Lucky.
